Intrusive thoughts are defined as unwanted, involuntary disturbing thoughts or ideas. Sometimes they are an urge to cause a disruption in a public place. Sometimes they are violently aggressive, like the urge to cause physical harm to a stranger. Sometimes they are the urge to cause physical harm to oneself. They are usually fleeting and, although they are often associated with OCD and ADHD, occur in an estimated 90% of the population.
L’appel du vide, roughly translated from the French as “The Call of the Void,” is a specific intrusive thought that manifests itself as the desire to jump from high places, e.g., cliffs or balconies.
